Terms of use.
In plain English, because terms you cannot read are not really terms.
These terms are the agreement between you and Considus when you use the Catchlight app or this website.
The most important thing: Catchlight is built so that only you can unlock your data, using your private phrase. If you lose that phrase, no one, including us, can recover your data. Keep it somewhere safe.
Catchlight is free to download. There is an optional paid subscription, which is sold and managed by Apple.
Using the app or the website means you accept these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the app or the website.
Who we are
Considus is a sole trader based in England. References to "we", "us" and "our" in these terms mean Considus.
Contact address: Considus, Unit 168318, PO Box 7169, Poole, Dorset, BH15 9EL, United Kingdom. For any questions about these terms, contact us at privacy@considus.com.
What these terms cover
These terms apply to your use of catchlight.app. They work alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle the limited personal data we hold.
They also apply to the Catchlight app for iOS. For the app, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Apple Standard EULA") also applies to your download from the App Store. These terms add to it. Where these terms say more than the Apple Standard EULA, these terms apply in addition.
Using this site
You are welcome to read this site, link to it, and quote from it with attribution. Please use it lawfully and as intended. Do not attempt to disrupt it, gain unauthorised access to it, probe its security, or use it in a way that breaks the law or infringes anyone else's rights.
We provide this site "as is" and may change or remove anything on it at any time without notice, and we may take it down entirely. We may suspend or withdraw access if these terms are seriously or repeatedly broken.
Our content and marks
The text, images and design of this site belong to Considus and are protected by copyright. The Considus name, wordmark and constellation mark are ours, as are the Catchlight name, logo and brand.
Quoting with attribution is fine. Reproducing the site wholesale, or using our name or marks in a way that suggests we endorse or are connected with something we are not, is not.
Software we publish
Software published by Considus is covered by the licence that ships with it, not by these terms. Where we publish source code, the licence in that repository governs what you may do with it.
Catchlight's source code is released as open source under the Apache License 2.0. That is separate from your use of the app you install from the App Store, which is covered by these terms.
Your licence to use Catchlight
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to download and use Catchlight on Apple devices that you own or control, for your own use, in line with these terms and the App Store's own terms.
Your privacy phrase and your data
This is the most important part, so we say it plainly.
- When you set up Catchlight, the app creates a private phrase (a 12-word mnemonic) on your device. Your notes, reminders and other content are encrypted with a key derived from that phrase.
- Only you hold that key. We never receive it and we keep no copy.
- This means that if you lose or forget your privacy phrase, your data cannot be recovered by anyone, including us. We cannot reset it, work around it, or restore your data for you.
- You are responsible for keeping your phrase safe, and for keeping your own backups, for example an export or the optional cloud folder that you control. We are not responsible for data you lose because a phrase is lost, or because of a problem with a device or a third-party cloud service you choose to use.
This is a deliberate part of how Catchlight protects your privacy, not a limitation we are able to remove.
Subscriptions and payments
Catchlight is free to download. Some features may require an optional paid subscription.
- Any subscription is sold by Apple through your Apple Account, not by us. Payment, billing and renewals are handled by Apple under Apple's terms.
- A subscription renews automatically at the price shown at purchase, unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account settings.
- We never see or store your card or payment details. Any refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies.
No warranty and your rights
- This site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that anything on it is complete or current. Nothing here is professional advice.
- Nothing in these terms limits or excludes any liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
- Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law.
- Subject to the above, and to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or unforeseeable loss, or for any loss arising from your use of this site or from anything you rely on here.
The same applies to the Catchlight app. Subject to the above, and to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss of data arising from a lost privacy phrase or from a third-party service.
Links to other sites
This site links to considus.com and to a small number of other sites. Those sites have their own terms and their own privacy policies, and we do not control them and are not responsible for them.
Apple and the App Store
These terms apply to your use of the Catchlight app in the following ways that Apple requires us to set out.
- These terms are between you and Considus only, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Catchlight or its content.
- Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Catchlight. Any questions about the app should come to us at privacy@considus.com.
- To the extent the law allows, Apple gives no warranty for the app. If the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund any purchase price; otherwise Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
- Apple is not responsible for handling any claims about the app, including product liability claims, claims that it does not meet a legal requirement, and consumer protection claims. Apple is not responsible for third-party claims that the app or your use of it infringes intellectual property rights; we are responsible for those, as these terms set out.
- You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated by the US Government as "terrorist-supporting", and that you are not on any US Government prohibited or restricted-party list.
- Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and may enforce them against you.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version number and effective date at the top show the current version, and changes are not applied retroactively. Continuing to use this site after an update means you accept the updated terms.
We will make material changes that affect the app or a subscription clear.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, this does not affect any right you have to bring proceedings in the country where you live.

We have kept these terms as short and plain as we can. They exist to be fair and clear, not to bury anything.
